World premiere of VoLTE Service based on a fully virtualized Core Network stack in Vip mobile’s live network environment
Vip mobile is among the first operators in the world to successfully test and demonstrate Voice over LTE calls in virtualized core network. Also, Vip is the first operator in Telekom Austria Group to launch its live deployment on all NFV technology nodes in multivendor environment: EPC by Connectem, virtualized Clearwater IMS Open Source by Metaswitch, and VoLTE AS by OpenCloud.
Long Term Evolution (LTE) improves the mobile service experience where traditional voice and messaging services will transform into rich media services. Until recently, 4G/LTE networks allowed high speed data transfers while calls were automatically switched to operators’ voice 2G or 3G network. With VoLTE voice transmission is now possible via operators’ 4G networks, bringing customers much higher voice and video HD quality, shorter call-setup time and calls while browsing Internet in parallel, including HD and ultra HD video streaming.
Guenther Ottendorfer, CTO Telekom Austria Group comments: “One of the major topics that will be wildly discussed at Mobile World Congress is Network Function Virtualization. Having already contributed a great deal of perspectives and developments regarding this trend, the Telekom Austria Group, with its successful trials, is amongst the first movers in the industry. NFV is a paradigm shift for the global Telecom industry but also shows that the game the industry is playing is only about to begin, with numerous innovations on the horizon which will further enhance the customer´s experience. NFV has signaled a new optimism within the industry, with the potential of offering huge opportunities to reengineer and optimize network infrastructure and deliver better service for our customers”.
Vip mobile is currently in the process of preparing for commercial implementation of 4G network in Serbia, which was a basis for limited live deployment of Voice over LTE service on NFV technology as an introduction of more advanced services that will be available in a near future.
Dejan Kastelic, director/CTO Vip mobile comments on the trial: “We are more than proud that Vip mobile achieved another successful NFV deployment. Being the youngest mobile operator and challenger in the market, we always seek for new opportunities to reshape the innovation landscape both in the local and regional markets. In this way we are directly improving our customers’ experience and expectation by introducing more efficient, cost-effective and energy saving solutions that enable faster time to market and flexible services delivery. Our dedication is to be the leader in providing new solutions to customers, vendors and local expert community by setting more advanced standards that will bring us closer to advanced European and world markets”, emphasized Kastelic.
VoLTE deployment is a big challenge for telco providers as the network providing the VoLTE service requires high performance, high integration and high capacity. Therefore virtualization of telecommunication network is required where Hardware is decoupled from Software and resources can be scheduled on demand with services expansion. NFV provides a telco operator to have an opened and automated network, which will be more dynamic, efficient and scalable. At the same time service provisioning time will be shortened that will bring new innovations opportunities both for operators and customers.
